Two-thirds of Illinois was once covered by prairie. The prairie is a park-like meadow dominated by grasses and other herbaceous plants. Trees in the prairie landscape are scarce or non-existent. There are 851 species of plants native to Illinois prairies, diversified from region to region. Each habitat can house up to 120 species. Unfortunately, most prairies are not large enough anymore to support such a melting pot of grasses and flowers.

There are certain environmental conditions necessary to support the grasslands: uneven rainfalls, dry winters, regular droughts, wind and fire, either natural or manmade. It’s also beneficial to have a herd of bison.

Bison graze, wallow and fertilize the prairies. The bison will concentrate on digesting their favorite plants in a certain area, and leave those they dislike to grow. The areas that were intensely grazed will have a chance to repopulate. Wallows are depressions that are created when the bison roll in the exposed soil of ground they previously trampled. Water will collect in these depressions, allowing for different types of grasses to appear. The recycled nitrogen in their manure also supports varied species of legumes, flowers and grasses.

There are some areas where the native prairies have been lost. A host of people from all walks of life have been working to restore these original habitats. There is no single condition or animal or human that can restore these areas on their own. A collective effort on our part will help restore the biodiversity in prairies and keep them healthier. We’ll need the bison to create diversity in the plants, managed and natural burns, and a whole lot of Mother Nature.

Please help protect our natural resources. Reuse and recycle.
